Still Figuring It Out – The Work No One Sees
There is something sacred about August.
The calendars are beginning to fill.
The classrooms are coming back to life.
Lesson plans are taking shape.
Fresh notebooks are waiting to be opened.
And somewhere between the excitement of a new beginning and the weight of everything that lies ahead, educators everywhere are quietly wondering…
“Can I do this again?”
If that’s you, I want to send you a little light today.
Not because I have all the answers.
But because I’m still figuring it out too.
As I walked back into my school this week, I was reminded that every new school year brings more than new students and new schedules.
It brings another opportunity to choose how we’ll show up.
Not just as educators.
But as people.
For years, I believed the best way to prepare for a new school year was to organize more, plan more, and work harder.
Those things matter.
But I’ve learned they aren’t enough.
The most important preparation doesn’t happen on a classroom wall or inside a lesson plan.
It happens within us.
It happens when we choose to protect our energy before we’re exhausted.
To reconnect with our purpose before we lose sight of it.
To build habits that sustain us long after the excitement of August fades into the demands of October.
Because here’s what I know to be true:
The students who walk through our doors deserve the very best of us.
And so do our families.
So do our colleagues.
And if I’m honest…
So do we.
This year, I don’t want to simply make it to the next break.
I don’t want to spend another June recovering from who I had to become just to survive.
I want to lead differently.
I want to live differently.
I want to protect the light that allows me to serve others.
Maybe you do too.
So as we step into another school year, this is the light I want to send with you:
May you remember that your worth is not measured by your productivity.
May you lead with courage when the answers aren’t obvious.
May you extend yourself the same grace you so freely give your students.
May you protect your energy as intentionally as you protect your lesson plans.
May you celebrate the small victories that often go unnoticed.
May you remember that your presence matters more than your perfection.
And when the days become long, and the work feels heavy, may you never forget why you started.
Because somewhere, a student needs exactly who you are becoming.
Not a perfect educator.
A present one.
A hopeful one.
A human one.
As we begin this new season, know that I’m cheering for you.
One habit.
One conversation.
One deep breath.
One day at a time.
Keep shining your light.
The world needs it.

Protect your light before the year asks you to spend it.
The brightest educators aren’t the ones who give everything away.
They’re the ones who learn how to refill what they pour into others.
